In 1960, Cuban photographer Alberto “Korda” Díaz captured a photo of Ernesto “Che” Guevara during a mass funeral for the victims of an explosion in Havana Harbour – a watershed moment in the emergence of a new Cuba. The photograph was only published once, in the year it was taken. In fact, for seven years, it existed as a simple cropped print, pinned on Korda’s wall, seen only by those who visited his studio. Almost 50 years later, the image remains one of the most dominant icons of the 20th century. In the last decade, with the establishment of the Internet, the image has once again travelled the globe in many forms.

 

 

En 1960, el fotógrafo cubano Alberto “Korda” Díaz tomó una foto de Ernesto “Che” Guevara durante el funeral en memoria de las víctimas de una explosión en el puerto de la Habana, que fue un parte aguas en la historia de la joven Cuba. La fotografía fue publicada en una única ocasión en el transcurso de ese año. La historia tomó su propio curso al permitir que este enérgico retrato se difundiera por Europa y América Latina en 1968, convirtiéndose en un símbolo de protesta y disidencia. Casi 50 años más tarde, la imagen sigue siendo uno de los iconos predominantes en nuestros tiempos.

Trisha Ziff is a curator of contemporary photography, filmmaker and Guggenheim scholar. She produced the documentary Oaxacalifornia. Luis López is a filmmaker from Tijuana, Mexico, and cofounder of the production/design company LargeLab. Chevolution premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
