Workshops

VLAFF has built a reputation for complementing its Festival programming with educational and professional development opportunities.

Launched in 2008, VLAFF in conjunction with local film industry equipment suppliers began hosting workshops focusing on different aspects on the Art and Craft of filmmaking. Our aim is to bring together esteemed industry professionals and suppliers from Canada and the United States to share their visions.  The generous assistance of corporate sponsors such as American Cinematographer, KODAK Entertainment Imaging, PS Production Services, Technicolor Creative Services, Clarimont Camera Film and Digital, Panavision Canada, Matrix Genesis, enabled us to you the following.

Our 2008 workshop allowed local visual storytellers and image makers the opportunity to learn from the pros about lighting, makeup and the latest in film, high definition and digital technologies. One of our highlights was a workshop featuring Academy Award winning Cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, ASC, AMC (Pan’s Labyrinth).

Our 2009 workshop proudly hosted Jack N. Green, ASC, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Unforgiven (1992) and whose roster includes such films as Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2009), The 40 year old Virgin (2005), 50 First Dates (2004), Girl Interrupted (1999) and The Bridges of Madison County (1995) among many titles.  Mr Green shared his cinematographic insights and experience with workshop attendees in an outstanding Master Lighting Session.

In 2009 we were also extremely proud to host Roberto Schaefer, ASC (The Kite Runner (2008), Quantum of Solace (2008), Finding Neverland (2004) and Monster’s Ball (2001), who shared his time with the audience in a moderator led Question and Answer session.

Our 2010 session will continue in this tradition.
