After the death of their grandfather in a mudslide, Jairo an itinerant photographer, and Marina his young amnesic and mute cousin, decide to go back and try to recover the land from which she was displaced years ago. They travel from Bogotá to the Caribbean Coast in an old beat-up Renault 4. During the trip the story of her traumatic past starts to unfold. Upon reaching their hometown, paramilitary soldiers kidnap them. While attempting to flee, Jairo is wounded. Marina goes to the ruins of her family home where she remembers the killing of her family.

 

Después de la muerte de su abuelo en un alúd de lodo, Jairo, un fotógrafo ambulante y Marina, su prima amnésica y muda, deciden ir a recuperar la tierra de la que fueron desplazados años atrás. Viajan desde Bogotá a la costa Caribe en un viejo y destartalado Renault 4. Durante el viaje Marina comienza a revivir su pasado traumático. Al llegar a su pueblo y anunciar que vienen por sus tierras, los paramilitares los secuestran. Al intentar huir, Jairo es herido. Marina va a las ruinas de su casa de familia buscando las escrituras que su abuelo enterró y allí revive la matanza de su familia.

Carlos Gaviria is a native of Colombia and has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the graduate film department of New York University. Over the years, Gaviria has been cinematographer in more than twenty features and documentaries both in the U.S. and in Latin America. He directed Minas, a 25-minute documentary on coal miners in Colombia. In television, Gaviria has directed 15 episodes of Mujeres Asesinas. The series won the TV y Novelas Best Dramatic Series in Colombia two years in a row. Retratos en un Mar de Mentiras won Best Ibero-American Film and Best Actress at the Guadalajara Film Festival this year, won Best First Film at the Cartagena Film Festival and had its world premiere at the 60th International Berlin Film Festival.
