Unlike other cities, in La Paz the wealthy live in the lower parts of town. Life passes by uneventfully in this large house surrounded by a lovely garden. It is a marvellous world, a big comfortable bubble shared by different individual spheres: Carola, the mother, her three children Patricio, Bernarda and Andres, and Wilson and Marcelina, two Aymara residents of the house. The drama unfolds slowly with no narrative ploys, observing everyday situations until internal and external pressures burst the bubble. Never before has the country been seen from below, from the southern region. “As a society, we Bolivians need to look at ourselves in the mirror. With this film, I decided to start with my self.” – Juan Carlos Valdivia

– Juan Carlos Valdivia

Juan Carlos Valdivia “After years of being an absolute film-lover, I completely stopped watching films. This led to profound self-questioning, Zona Sur resulted from this awe-inspiring, creative quarantine”. Valdivia began in the movies with Jonás y la ballena rosada, a story of love and drug trafficking that broke the mould of Bolivian films at the time. After continuing his career in Mexico, he returned to Bolivia to work on a wide array of audiovisual projects with his production company, Cinenómada. Zona Sur was selected for the 2010 Sundance Festival, and won both the World Cinema Directing: Dramatic and World Cinema Screenwriting awards, and has been selected in Tokyo, Havana, Guadalajara among many other festivals.
