VLAFF SPECIAL EVENT: ARCHEOLOGY OF MEMORY: TRANSFORMING HORROR INTO BEAUTY

The VLAFF is pleased to welcome Claudio Durán back to Vancouver and is proud to showcase this special event, which will include the performance of the musical suite Archeology of Memory: Villa Grimaldi, the screening of the film of the same name and an exhibition of accompanying gigantographics.

After spending close to a year in concentration camps, Claudio Durán, an accomplished musician and a dedicated member of the resistance movement to the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, arrived in Vancouver in July of 1976. He was barely twenty years old. By September of that year he had formed a small band, Resistencia, composed of a handful of exiled Chileans. For the next two years Resistencia performed regularly at local events and also toured British Columbia and Alberta.

More than thirty years later, Claudio Durán, now living in California, returns to Vancouver with his quintet Quijeremá, this time to present three components of an art-piece entitled Archeology of Memory: Villa Grimaldi. The project, which includes a musical suite, a book, a documentary film and a multi media installation, gathers the work and experiences of six Chilean artists who, like Durán, were detained at the Villa Grimaldi torture centre. While weaving a compelling narrative, the multifaceted art-piece digs down into the depths of darkness and horror and succeeds in transforming them into healing and beauty.
