Thirteen Latin American films to compete for the Horizontes Award in San Sebastian.

Thirteen films from different Latin American countries will compete for the Horizontes Award, carrying 35,000 euros, at the 57th San Sebastian Festival. Each year, the Horizontes Latinos section traces the path of the most interesting and groundbreaking Latin American movies of the year, including a number of titles endorsed by the year’s biggest fests, and others taking their first steps in an interesting career.

Horizontes Latinos includes features produced totally or partially in Latin America, directed by moviemakers of Latin origin, or the framework or theme of which are Latin communities throughout the world. They also have to meet the requirement of not having been previously presented at any other Spanish festival or having been commercially released in Spain.

The coming edition will include the participation of films from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, the production of which is in some cases backed by European countries like Spain, Germany, France, Holland and Portugal, and North American countries including the USA and Canada.

Horizontes Latinos will kick off with Sin nombre, a USA-Mexico co-production constituting one of the season’s first hits on garnering the Directing (Cary Joji Fukunaga) and Cinematography (Adriano Goldman) Awards at Sundance Festival, followed by the Skillset New Directors Award at Edinburgh.

Some of the movies selected landed their first break while still uncompleted, when they were chosen to participate in one of the several editions of Films in Progress, the twice-yearly event organised jointly by the San Sebastian and Toulouse festivals.

El árbol (The Tree), Contracorriente, Ilusiones ópticas, La invención de la carne and Perpetuum mobile come from the Films in Progress hotbed and some of them, completed thanks to the aid obtained from the endeavour, have gone on to participate in international festivals, as in the case of: El árbol (Rotterdam) or La invención de la carne (Locarno).

Other films selected for Horizontes Latinos have been presented or won prizes at the big festivals: Gigante was one of the big surprises at the Berlin Festival, bagging three Official Selection awards; others to have made their mark at Cannes are Los viajes del viento in Un Certain Regard, Daniel y Ana (Daniel and Anna) in the Directors’ Fortnight and Huacho (Huacho) in the Critics’ Week; El último verano de la Boyita was acclaimed at the Bafici and Marea de arena at Guadalajara, while Francia was selected for Venice Days.
