For five generations, El Mercurio was the most powerful and influential newspaper in Chile. Its role during the Pinochet dictatorship makes it among the most taboo topics in contemporary Chilean history. Traditional media has long remained silent on the subject – until now. This documentary unearths almost 40 years of political activity from inside the offices of the so-called “dean” of Chilean journalism. The revelations of the film make it mandatory viewing.

El diario El Mercurio por cinco generaciones ha sido el más influyente y poderoso en toda la historia de Chile. Y su rol durante la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet bien puede ser el tema más tabú de nuestra historia reciente. Por cierto, los medios de comunicación tradicionales han guardado silencio ante el tema y – quizás por ello – este documental se dedica a relatar casi cuarenta años de acción política desde las oficinas de redacción del llamado “decano” del periodismo chileno.

Ignacio Agüero was born in Chile in 1952. He has been a union leader, editor of movie magazines, film actor and professor at the University of Chile. His most relevant role to date has been as a director and producer of independently produced documentaries, which have brought him national and international awards. El Diario de Agustín won Best Latin American Documentary at the Atlantidoc Festival in Uruguay and second prize in the documentary category at the 2008 Havana Film Festival in Cuba.
